Description
Alkacitron is a urinary alkalizer primarily used to treat and manage conditions related to high uric acid levels and acidic urine. It is commonly available as an oral liquid (syrup) containing Disodium Hydrogen Citrate (typically 1.38g per dose) as its active ingredient.
Primary Uses
Alkacitron is indicated for the following medical conditions:
- Kidney Stones: It helps dissolve existing uric acid crystals and prevents the formation of new stones by making the urine less acidic.
- Gout: It assists in lowering high uric acid levels in the blood, which reduces the risk of painful crystal formation in joints.
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): While not an antibiotic, it alleviates the burning sensation, pain, and irritation during urination by neutralizing acidic urine.
- Renal Tubular Acidosis: It helps restore the body's natural acid-base balance in patients with certain kidney-related metabolic disorders.
Mechanism of Action
Alkacitron works by increasing the pH of the urine, making it more alkaline. Disodium hydrogen citrate is metabolized in the body into bicarbonates, which are then excreted in the urine. This process enhances the solubility of uric acid, allowing it to be more easily removed from the body through urination.
How to Use & Dosage
- Dilution: It must always be diluted in a glass of water or fruit juice before consumption. Timing: It is generally recommended to take the syrup after meals to minimize potential stomach upset.
- Hydration: Patients are advised to drink plenty of water while using this medication to help flush excess minerals and acids from the system.
- Standard Adult Dosage: Typically 1 to 2 teaspoonfuls taken 3 to 4 times daily, or as specifically directed by a healthcare professional.
Side Effects & Precautions
Most side effects are minor and temporary, but common ones include:
- Nausea and vomiting.
- Stomach pain or abdominal discomfort.
- Diarrhea and increased frequency of urination.
Important Warnings:
- Existing Conditions: Use with extreme caution if you have kidney disease, heart disease, high sodium levels, or high potassium levels (hyperkalemia).
- Pregnancy/Nursing: Consult a doctor before use, as there is limited safety data available for these groups.
- Interactions: Inform your doctor if you are taking antacids (specifically those with aluminum or magnesium), aspirin, or lithium, as these can interact with the syrup.
